Honours Student of the Month - Matt Spence "How have you enjoyed your experience as an Honours student so far?” "It's been a blast! It's been great to meet new people and begin to apply the knowledge we've been taught over the last 4 years. Getting to know the researchers in the field and networking with the scientific community has also been really advantageous in other aspects of my life as well." “Tell us about your research project” "At the Kidney Research Centre, we are currently studying the in vivo localization of endothelial colony forming cell derived exosomes, and specifically miRNA486-5p, for the treatment of acute kidney injury." “What advice would you have for other undergraduate researchers?” "Start early. Start networking with professors in first year, whether it's professors from class or researchers in interesting fields. The more people you know to give advice and get you involved in the community, the better. It opens up so many doors." “What's the most embarrassing thing you've done in the lab?” "In exosome isolation, we do sequential centrifugations at faster and faster speeds to isolate the particles. During my first isolation, I missed one of the two caps on the centrifuge tube and dumped all of the preparation all over the floor. Not one of my best days." Photo creds: Suzy Sun
