Honours Student of the Month - Anabel Bergeron “How have you enjoyed your experience as an Honours student so far?” “As I am envisaging a career in healthcare and research, this opportunity not only further confirmed my professional goals but also provided me with the experience and the skillset to reach them! I truly enjoy exploring the field of oncolytic therapy and networking with scientists and experts on the subject.” “Tell us about your research project” “Sarcomas are heterogeneous tumours originating from mesenchymal tissues that predominantly affect children. Despite some improvement in survival rates, a number of patients still have poor treatment outcomes – new treatment options are thus needed. My project aims to explore the combination of a drug with an oncolytic virus as a potential combination therapy against sarcomas.” “What advice would you have for other undergraduate researchers?” “Believe in yourself and your abilities. The world of research and science can at times seem intimidating but remember that ground-breaking discoveries are accomplished by researchers that were once in your undergraduate shoes. Take calculated risks and remember that there are no conventional paths to achieving your goals.” “What's the most embarrassing thing you've done in the lab?” “I am not used to carrying an access card and have locked myself out of the lab many times. Also, the ink on my photo ID is slightly rubbed off on my head and it looks like I have a massive bald spot :)” Photo creds: Suzy Sun
